On March 18th, Loon Mountain hosted their 13th annual Last Call. With the incoming Spring, the weather was an unusual blue bird day over the White Mountains with the sun shining on the slopes. The contest brought in riders from all over the East Coast as well as some who flew in the night before just to compete and hopefully take home some money. Competitors weren’t the only ones crowding the hill, spectators lined along the side with stashed beers in their gloves waiting to see what these kids had to throw down.
It’s time to raise a glass (can, bottle, PBR, whatever you have) to Eastern Boarder who in the past 13years has made Last Call the biggest event on the East Coast. This year the ‘big air’ portion created the challenge of a 55ft booter to start off the day. The ladies took it on as if it was a mere bump in the snow and Elin Tortorise claimed it with a backside 540.
The crowd didn’t stir unless they were getting better view or trying to find where they stashed their brews in the woods earlier. Once it was time for the rail jam, it was on! The girls were dropping in right alongside the boys and holding their own. VNTRbirds being represented by Jaime Del Pizzo and Jamie Trayer (welcome to the team) didn’t stop killing it. Mary Rand stood out with her disaster to the last down on the DFD as well as Amy Gan and Emma Graham who were jibbing all sides of the pipe features.
It all ended with an hour long session on the giant Loon Mountain wall ride that happened to look like a house. The ladies never stopped charging, coming in hot and reaching the top with some smooth stalls and hand plants.
By the end of the event Elin Tortorise took first while Mary Rand and Amy Gan came in close behind with second and third respectively. The crowd was full of stammer either reflecting on the hammered tricks or trying to find a sober driver to get them home. Most just went straight to the Bunyan Room to continue the Monday celebration.
