Afghan woman, Hanifa Yousoufi, was the first to climb Noshaq, the tallest peak in Afghanistan. At 24,580 feet, this isn’t an easy trek, and for decades it went unclimbed. Due to Taliban rule, and civil wars, the summit of Noshaq went untouched until 2009. Organized by Ascend Athletics, a US based non-profit organization working in Afghanistan to empower young women through mountaineering based leadership training, Yousoufi looked to the summit. Though, it wasn’t as easy as just setting out on a hike, as reports of Taliban shooting down a military helicopter that day came through to the group, they needed to find a new way to get to the trailhead. This is their story.
